"Just once more," they had said when Ellie's team petitioned for it. She was busy with Palmer, falling in love with science while he fell in love with God, and Kent was left to pick up the pieces. He wanted another damn go at it. The Machine had a pricetag in the billions; it was begging to be used again.

But they wouldn't let Ellie go. They wouldn't let just anyone go. They wanted someone who knew how it worked, who had been there from the beginning, but someone who isn't completely taken in by Ellie's words.

That leads them to a dozen people and they end up with Kent. He's blind, but that's not what decides it. They claim that he wouldn't hallucinate the way Ellie did. That he has a unique perspective.

And, he's already proven himself steady and loyal.

He experiences it all the way that Ellie does, but something goes wrong on the other end. Maybe another terrorist attack. Maybe not. All he knows is that he's in the sphere and then, suddenly, he's floating, unable to find his footing until a great crash and he slams into the bottom of the machine.

He groans, pulling his helmet on with a grunt and a wince.

"Fuck this," he mutters, finding the edge of the sphere with his hands. There was a door there somewhere. He just - has to find it.

Kent listens to them wander off, giving a bit of a wave as their voices fade. The wine is passed around, Kent declines, and the others roast their marshmallows and trade stories.

By the time the night is amping up, Kent has definitely had enough and he waits for Feldspar to return.

Feldspar is pulled into a dance with Gossan and then with Gneiss, but they manage to wriggle their way out of any more social interactions as the others slowly get drunker and drunker around them. They suspect the only ones who aren't as drunk as they appear are Rutile and Tektite, but that makes sense for the two older and wiser Hearthians.

They find Kent and take their hand, leaning down to whisper into their ear. "Let's sneak out of here."

Kent raises his head at the touch to his hand and nods, standing up and following. He grabs his stick on the way, but holds it close to his body, letting Feldspar lead him where he needs to go.

They hurry to leave the campfire, though they don't really care if anyone sees them leaving together. It's more that they're eager to be alone with him, to hold his hand and maybe sneak in a few kisses. Which they do when they're far enough away from the other villagers, turning and walking Kent backwards against a tree. They place their hands on his hips and lean forward to kiss them soundly.

Kent has no protests to this. The tree is firm and sturdy behind his back and he breathes it, draping one arm around his shoulders.

"What's this about?" he grins against his mouth.

They grin and nip gently at Kent's lower lip. "Because I haven't kissed you since last night." As far as they know anyway.

"And I've been wanting to."

They are strong and soft and warm, and Kent pulls them in for another kiss.

"How do I know this isn't a kidnaping, huh?"

“I don’t know what that is,” Feldspar murmurs, pressing soft kisses along Kent’s jaw. “But if you don’t want this I’ll walk you back to the campfire and you can listen to Porphy ramble about ‘bouquets’ and ‘mouthfeel’.”

"Don't be cruel," he laughs, his arms around them. "You don't want that any more than me."

He raises his chin, giving them access to his neck, to kiss him wherever.

"I'm not going anywhere."

“That’s what I figured,” they huff against his neck. He tastes like smoke from the campfire, and they find a soft place just under his ear to lick and suck.

“You taste good.”

Kent sighs, swallowing hard, sliding his hands along their back and to their cute little goddamn butt. He squeezes.

Oh, double squeeze. Feldspar laughs against his cheek and kisses him again, reaching down to grab one of Kent’s legs and haul it up over their hip.

All that sap wine and adorable hatchling interaction gets their hormones all riled.

Kent wraps that leg around them and leans back on the tree. "We aren't going to make it back to the cabin, are we?"

“No, no, we are,” Feldspar huffs, leaving little bite marks on his throat. “I don’t want to be caught again, but you’re just so…”

They growl softly and presses their hips against his.

Kent gently pushes them back. "Stop," he laughs. "Or I'm stripping you down here."

They resist being pushed away and kiss Kent again, fulfilling that need to keep going despite their better judgement. But they do want to be stripped down by Kent, so they pull away with quiet pant and grab him by the hand again to drag him away.

Kent lets himself get dragged, but then he starts to hurry along the path that he knows so well. "Come on," he laughs. "Slowpoke."

Feldspar lets Kent lead them for a change, hurrying after him with a quiet chuckle. "I'm moving, I'm moving! My cabin is closer!"

Kent turns a little and takes their hand. "Fine, yours it is. But when I bang my shin on a chair, it's your fault."

"You shouldn't be anywhere near a chair! Only the bed!"

Their cabin is small and tucked away, sitting on the edge of the woods just outside the crater. It's inconvenient when they needed to do things in the village proper, but it's perfect now for their purposes. They drag Kent inside and slam the door shut with their foot, pulling him right into the bedroom.

"Oh, so you're kicking me out after this?" he teases. "You're here to use me?"

But he backs up, into the bed, and sits down heavily on it.

“Shut up,” Feldspar laughs, sliding into Kent’s warm lap and wrapping their arms around his neck. “You’re so annoying.”

He slides his arms around them and pull them close. "Then shut me up," Kent dares them with the straightest face.

A challenge? Oh, Feldspar never backs down from a challenge! They grin and pushes Kent down onto their bed, kissing him fiercely while their hips bear down against his.

Kent laughs, but he's not able to let it go any more than that because suddenly Feldspar is there, just with him, and he feels a flush rise to his cheeks.

He returns that kiss, then wraps his legs around their waist, keeping them down and close.
