"Just once more," they had said when Ellie's team petitioned for it. She was busy with Palmer, falling in love with science while he fell in love with God, and Kent was left to pick up the pieces. He wanted another damn go at it. The Machine had a pricetag in the billions; it was begging to be used again.

But they wouldn't let Ellie go. They wouldn't let just anyone go. They wanted someone who knew how it worked, who had been there from the beginning, but someone who isn't completely taken in by Ellie's words.

That leads them to a dozen people and they end up with Kent. He's blind, but that's not what decides it. They claim that he wouldn't hallucinate the way Ellie did. That he has a unique perspective.

And, he's already proven himself steady and loyal.

He experiences it all the way that Ellie does, but something goes wrong on the other end. Maybe another terrorist attack. Maybe not. All he knows is that he's in the sphere and then, suddenly, he's floating, unable to find his footing until a great crash and he slams into the bottom of the machine.

He groans, pulling his helmet on with a grunt and a wince.

"Fuck this," he mutters, finding the edge of the sphere with his hands. There was a door there somewhere. He just - has to find it.

Feldspar adjusts themselves to help Kent guide his cock inside, sucking in their breath as the head touches their cunt and then slowly pushes inside. "I didn't know it was there," he murmurs, breathing out, aching for them. "Until Gneiss came and said they thought I might be sick. I - had to tell them it was just getting old."

He closes his eyes tightly, feeling his face tense. "Baby...I'm not going to last." There's no way. It's been years.

Kent may even be more beautiful like this, silver hairs and little lines in his forehead and around his eyes. Feldspar smiles, glad that they’re around to see it for themselves.

However they are equally as unable to hang onto the conversation, feeling the muscles start to wind tighter and tighter in their pelvis and stomach. “Call me ‘baby’ again.”

"I know," he assures them with a soft pat against their back. "I know you do. I never doubted it. But - maybe take a while before you leave me again, huh?"

They’re never getting back into another ship besides this one, and they know it. “Yeah,” they smile, absently rubbing one of their ears against Kent. “Yeah, it’ll be a while.”

"That's okay," he mutters, kissing them. "There's plenty to see around here."

And a dramatic pause.

"At least that's what they tell me."

Feldspar turns to try to catch Kent’s lips again, humming softly as the shape of his mouth fits against theirs. They slide their head back down and close all four eyes.

“There is. Lots and lots. We’ll have to sit out by the riverbank together.”

"I'd like that," he admits. "Maybe later today? I like hearing them work."

He likes the sound of industry with the Heartheans. It reminds him of how alive they are.

"Right now, though...I am taking a nap."

“Mn. Be quiet then.” They grin a little and lay a little more of their weight on Kent, letting the feeling of his soft skin and warm body lull them to sleep.

He goes quiet but he doesn't sleep. He brushes tears from his face. They're bittersweet and cling to his skin. They just keep coming and Kent can't make them stop until he finally cries himself to sleep, holding fast to the only love he's ever really known.

They wake a few hours later with that same warmth pressing against theirs body, the smell of Kent’s skin in their nose and the tickle of hair against their forehead. They smile softly to themselves and dig their arm out from the blankets to drape over his chest, wanting to feel the rise and fall of their breath as they enjoy some cuddles while Kent continues to sleep.

"I'm not asleep," he mutters, feeling him stir a little. He pats their hand, yawning a bit. He managed to get to sleep, to rest and dream a while, but he's been up thinking...or maybe just worrying.

"I've been thinking about that computer program. The simulation. We need to restore power to it so it doesn't go out."

Feldspar perks their head up, thoughts of snuggling their way to nibbling on Kent’s ear temporarily leaving their brain.

“Yeah, good idea. I told Lapis we need to talk to Slate and Hornfels. Between the three of you you’ll be able to stabilize the power supply.”

"I'll talk to them about it later. Does Lapis know where the power is stored?"

He turns to face them, burying his face against their chest. It's been a long time since he's felt...useful. Like he has a project.

“Maybe, they know this place pretty well, but they didn’t say outright.”

Feldspar wraps their arms around Kent, rubbing his shoulders softly.
