"Just once more," they had said when Ellie's team petitioned for it. She was busy with Palmer, falling in love with science while he fell in love with God, and Kent was left to pick up the pieces. He experiences it all the way that Ellie does, but something goes wrong on the other end. Maybe another terrorist attack. Maybe not. "Fuck this," he mutters, finding the edge of the sphere with his hands. There was a door there somewhere. He just - has to find it.

Kent wraps an arm around them, breathing them in, listening to the sound of the hatchling murmuring in their sleep. "You can wake me up any time you need to," he murmurs.

They smile against Kent’s warm skin. “You don’t want to promise that.” Because they will.

They quiet and fall asleep quickly, wiped out for the time being.

He means it, too. But it's not Feldspar who wakes him up; it's Lapis.

He automatically sits up, rubbing his face. "They slept in," he murmurs.

Feldspar sits up groggily too, extending their arm out to force Kent to lie back down. The bet was just a fun little game - in reality they only have so many more days that they can do this before they’ll be back in space and Kent will have to take over.

“I’ve got them. Go back to sleep.”

They pull on their trousers quickly and go to fetch the little hatchling to give them something to eat.

Kent turns over and lies back down, but he doesn't sleep. He just rests a while, listening to the sounds of the two people he loves the most in the other room.

He'll wait for Feldspar.

Feldspar talks to the hatchling, as they have with all the hatchlings that have wound up in their care. Their words are quieter though, softer and more affectionate, and when the hatchling’s belly is good and full they set them back down into the crib and slip back into bed.

"How's Lapis?" he mutters, holding them closer as he presses a kiss to their shoulder.
